Thoughts from my recliner

I haven't felt well for most of the week and have tried to just rest and recuperate, which translates into reading, sitting--foot elevated--with my lapdog on my lap, wrapping up in blankets for warmth, and intermittently doing those things that have needed to be done that I felt up to doing. I do not really watch much TV, so I have run through a lot of books this week. I am going to try to go to work tomorrow without my boot (but with an ankle brace) and see how that goes for my ankle as well as for whatever germ I have been battling this week.  You can tell that I've just had the view inside my own brain for most of the week so this is a pretty boring and me-centered post.  The upside to sticking around the house has been to be home with my kids, the honyocks, all week.  They can be pretty entertaining.  We have had some good laughs!

Edna-isms, Part Nineteen

1.  "When you have nothing to do and can't sleep . . . ."  When Mom was going to ask you to do something but knew you were busy, she might say this as a preface to her request.

2.  "Run off and join the circus."  This was said as a joke when she felt frustrated and wanted to run away from something.

3.  "Go golly west."  This meant something like, "Knock yourself out."

A belated Sunday post . . . on Thursday

I think Sunday got away from me before I posted a Sunday update here.  So here goes an update, with a little of this and that from the past few weeks.

 J and L had a piano recital Monday evening.

 J was inducted into the National Honor Society last night.

A couple of weeks ago, L went to Preference (this is the "day date" picture).

T turned 20 very recently and he insisted that his birthday should start out first thing with him receiving his gifts--hence the pjs in this picture!

Monday, B and I attended a graveside in Richfield for my mother's cousin.  I felt my mother would want me to go and so we did.  It was nice to meet distant cousins--strangers actually.  I appreciated hearing good things about the deceased, too, since I barely knew him.  It was also nice to have a nice drive with B.

That's what has been up with us lately.

Academic All-state

Thursday, we went north for high school state swim championships.  It was a good weekend away from home . . . and the swim finals were nice, too.  :0)  The high light of the weekend was that L (along with about 19 other 3A swimmers from around the state) was awarded Academic All-state! She was the only one from our region, too. 

(Inexplicably I have on my phone a picture of the young men, with the young women awaiting their awards, and not the young women. So here is a picture of the only two seniors on the local team with a total of 6 on the three teams that practice together--not many seniors this year).   

OK. Now we have a picture!

Edna-isms, Part Eighteen

1.  "I feel like I've been pulled through a knothole backwards!"  A well-known phrase she often used.

2.  "Mine and Yourn."  Probably the English teacher coming out in her--if "my" became "mine," then "your" should become "yourn."

3.  "Thin as frog's hair."  This is always how she referred to her own hair, which was very thin hair indeed.

The week in review

P: Doctor appointment this past week. Ankle making progress. Maybe changes afoot (pun not intended :0) Carpool end in sight.
L: Preference yesterday. Academic All-state for swim. State swim competition coming up.
J: Honor roll last quarter. Finally well.
T: College. Rarely ill.
B: Working two jobs. Finally well.

Edna-isms, Part Seventeen

1.  "Put a pin in it." When we were interrupted during a conversation (phone might ring, someone else enter the room), Mom would say, "Put a pin in it" meaning to remember what we were saying and we'd come back to it after the interruption.

2.  "For cryin' in the beer!"  This was a cuss phrase.  My husband says I should not use it because it seems to endorse alcohol consumption . . . . so I don't but that was never my urge when Mom said this.  :0)

3. "Good gravy!"  This was also a cuss phrase, like "good grief" which Mom also said a lot.
