Blast from the distant past and the not-so-distant past

This is a picture of the original LV chapel. I don't ever remember it looking like this. Do you? And this picture is the preface to the two following pictures, below. Yesterday at my PPI, the bishop gave me the two following photographs.

This is a picture of the then-living bishops of LV and their wives, taken in 1989. My parents are seated on the far left. I won't identify the rest--either you know them and therefore recognize them or you don't know them and consequently don't recognize them. Of the 17 people pictured here, nine have passed on.

This is the photograph of the then-living bishops (1989). What a great photo. My dad is on the front row with the cane. Of the nine men pictured here, six have passed on. Of the bishops of the LV ward up to that point (1989), only three are missing from this photograph: M. Wilson, L. Iverson, and V. Church.

Well, I did get some things done the other day, so my premonition was wrong. Today, I have cut out five of the seven pajama pants and I've been a nurse to J who is ill. I don't know where August has gone.

I feel I've been ignoring this blog although not on purpose.

I made one batch of peach raspberry jam today and helped Bryan with some . . . peach topping. Tomorrow, I plan to make one batch of peach strawberry jam. Now that I type out that sentence, it feels doomed; it feels like "famous last words"--something that will not happen. Today was a nice, otherwise unencumbered day for projects. I spent time cutting out almost all the paper patterns for some pajama pants I'm going to make. After I finish that task, I need to cut the pajama pants--all seven of them--out of the fabric--and then start sewing like crazy. The pinning and cutting out always feel like they take longer than the sewing. I think it is because I enjoy the sewing and I am not as enthusiastic about the pinning and cutting but it is necessary and I'm glad to do it.

We made tie-dyed T-shirts for Family Home Evening tonight. I've had the "fixin's" for about six weeks, just waiting for a Monday when we were all at home. The kits were from Wal-mart and the instructions say to let the shirts sit for 6-8 hours. So sometime tomorrow, we'll unbundle the shirts, and wash them. It will be interesting to see how all the shirts turn out. I don't know if the boys will actually wear their shirts (maybe as pajama tops?) but L and I will enjoy ours. L even tie-dyed some white footies and J tie-dyed another white T-shirt that he happened to have. He said he might be a hippie for Halloween! Well, he'd definitely have the shirt for it. Maybe we could all be hippies for Halloween! Groovy, man!

Sonntag

School started this week. What a lot of money it seemed to take to get everyone squared away! Meine gute! Of course, it is nothing compared to what it would be if we had to pay for the whole year of school times 3 kids, but it still seemed a lot at one time.

So far, the kids are optimistic about school and are happy to see all their friends. Two days down and about 178 school days to go?

I visited Mom this morning and she was complaining about her back. I don't know if that was from her old injury from the fall in the hall (the one that landed her in the hospital) or if it was from the new fall a week ago Friday.

B had been working with the SEATS (Single Engine Air Tankers) but they've been sent to Tooele and so that leaves B without work--at last at this moment. Maybe something else will crop up.

Cove Fort

We had a YM/YW activity at Cove Fort yesterday during the annual Cove Fort Days and I think it has to be the best time of year to visit Cove Fort. Besides the regular tours of the Fort (given this weekend by a team of missionaries dressed a pioneers), there were people discussing and displaying pioneer handicrafts and work. There were: a blacksmith working on metal, a farmer harvesting hay with his horse-drawn hay tool, women quilting (both on quilting frames and lap quilting), women making rag rugs on looms, an herbalist, a potter (who had made the pottery at Cove Fort), a lace maker, a wood carver, a bee keeper, a man cooking outdoors on dutch ovens, a sawyer, some fancy chickens to pet, and teamsters giving rides for all in a stage coach or wagon. There were pioneer games, continuous entertainment and free food. The weather was great. We had a small turn-out but everyone got along well and I think everyone enjoyed the day.

OK, I'll give the answer for the "quiz" in the last post. That picture is taken in La Verkin on 300 South near the highway, looking south toward the hot pots. It doesn't look at all like La Verkin to me.

This picture is of my mother and her friends--they called themselves "Our Gang." Mom is the gal with the white sun glasses on. It looks like they were having fun! My mother's friend (second from the left) just sent a copy of this photograph to Mom.

School starts a week from today. The summer seems to have just flown by so I am not quite ready to send the kids back to school but I am looking forward to getting back on a schedule. I've been working on getting the kids outfitted for school and, other than shoes and school supplies, I'm nearly done.

This Saturday, our Young Men/Young Women combined activity is to go to "Cove Fort Days." I'm looking forward to that. They are supposed to have food, pioneer demonstrations, displays and, of course, there is the fort itself to tour.
