This weekend, our family went to a Japanese Festival. T is taking Japanese and his teacher told the class about the festival. I felt like it was important to follow up on T's interest in something that wasn't electronic. ;o) At the festival, we happened to see T's Japanese teacher and his family.
T was particularly taken with the Bonsai trees. A few years ago, T had had a small Bonsai tree, but it did not live very long. At that same time, I used to read a book at bedtime to T about Bonsai trees, how they are made and cared for, so this was capitalizing on T's long-time interest.
There were a lot of Anime enthusiasts there.
I enjoyed this Kimono fashion show. We watched some of a presentation on marshal arts, and some school children (primarily non-Asian children) singing some songs.
I was not daring enough, nor did I have the cash-on-hand, to try the food. Once B arrived with cash, we were too bushed to follow through and buy food there. I wish I'd felt more daring. Years ago, I did order and eat sushi at a restaurant in Hawaii so I am not without my daring moments but this was not one of my daring moments.
The information for the festival had said it was a way to teach third, fourth and fifth generation Japanese American kids about their Japanese heritage. I had expected a little more . . . hmm . . . instruction or maybe a little more of the organizers connecting the dots for attendees (i.e., me)? Consequently, the festival was not exactly what I expected; however, we had a nice time.
